Designs Owned by Your Contractor

By Kristyne McDaniel

Many general contractors have a library of home plans that they have built a number of times before, and which they can make available for you to adapt and use for your own home. These home plans will be tuned so that they can be quickly and efficiently built by your contractor within a predictable time frame and at a predictable cost. If your budget is limited, consider a plan owned by your contractor as your first choice, and modify it to suit your needs.

When you are interviewing your contractor for the first time, you may already have selected a home plan. If you can, bring that with you and ask if he or she has anything similar that they have built in the past which could be adapted to be suitable for your needs. If not, ask if they have suggestions for adjusting your plans to make the construction more efficient. You may be pleasantly surprised by just how adaptable your contractor can be if you give him a chance.
